Bulldogs roll past La Grande to claim crown

La Grande tried a different strategy against Baker in Saturday’s Greater Oregon League district girls basketball championship game at BHS.

The Tigers tried what amounted almost to a stall to try to keep the ball away from Baker’s high-powered offense. After a slow start Baker rolled to an easy 66-29 win to clinch the district championship for the second straight year.

“Hats off to them for trying to slow it down on us,” said Baker coach Mat Sand.

“Their coach told me before the game he was going to do that. It changed things up.

“I wanted the girls to learn to switch on the high defense. For the most part they did that. We had a couple of other things we could have done we didn’t want to show them right now,” Sand said.

The slowdown worked for about one quarter. Baker used a pair of Rose Gwillim free throws with 38 seconds left in the first quarter to take an 8-6 lead into the break.

Then, baskets by Emily Carter, Sydney Younger and Jayme Ramos to start the second quarter gave Baker a 14-6 lead. The Bulldogs would never trail again.

La Grande didn’t score in the second period until just 2:37 remained in the half.

Baker led 19-10 at halftime.

La Grande then scored the first basket of the second half before Baker went on a 20-0 run.

Younger led the way with nine points. Desi Davis added four, Gwillim three, and Carter and Ramos two each.

Baker led 41-14 entering the fourth quarter.

Younger, Carter and Gwillim each scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs (20-1 overall). Ramos added 10. Baker now awaits a playoff opponent.
