As many as 100 permanent jobs on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest could be lost if early budget projections become reality.

Although the forest probably won’t have a final budget allocation until late this summer at the earliest, preliminary estimates are for a one billion board foot timber target in Region 6.

The Baker City Council will recommend changes in downtown parking regulations during its regular Tuesday meeting.

An April 2007 study conducted by Baker City Police Officer Wayne Chastain indicated that police had “received and experienced” several concerns regarding angle parking downtown, in particular at two intersections: Washington and First, and Court and First.

Former Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts said the efforts to plan and build the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center were an incredible accomplishment of federal, state, city and county agencies as well as charitable foundations and community members.

“It’s amazing to think of the teamwork that made (the center) possible,” Roberts told the Herald before she spoke during the center’s 25th anniversary celebration Thursday morning.

As governor, Roberts, now 80, attended the center’s groundbreaking, its ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony on May 25, 1992, and its 10th anniversary.
