Fanned by gentle breezes rather than buffeted by gusts, firefighters on Monday came near to taming a wildfire that frazzled more than a few nerves in Cove late last week.

“Crews made excellent progress yesterday,” Angie Johnson, an information officer at the Bridge Creek fire camp, said this morning.

Weekend weather more typical of autumn than of summer allowed crews working on the Rail fire near Unity to shift their focus from dousing flames to cleaning up after themselves.

“There is a lot of confidence in the control lines,” said Karen Ripley, an information officer at the fire camp at Burnt River School in Unity.

The fire, which started July 31, did not grow during the weekend. It has burned 41,716 acres. Investigators have not determined the cause.

Although the fire is officially 80 percent contained, Ripley said there is little risk that the blaze will cross any control lines after a weekend that brought light rain, hail and temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

“There is still some smoldering in the interior, but fire severity is quite low,” Ripley said this morning.
