A blizzard which at its most blustery cut drivers’ visibility to less than the length of a car prompted officials to close a 150-mile stretch of Interstate 84 for several hours Sunday, including the section in Baker County.

The storm also closed Highway 30 between Haines and North Powder from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

No major accidents were reported on either the freeway or on Highway 30.

The Oregon Trail Interpretive Center will be the new home of a book of historic pioneer maps thanks to Sen. Ron Wyden.

Through a partnership between the Library of Congress and the office of the Oregon Democrat, the 170-year-old, seven-section topographical map of the Oregon Trail that is bound into a book, has been secured for display at the Interpretive Center on Flagstaff Hill about five miles east of Baker City.

Center Director Sarah LeCompte is excited to receive the map.

“It’s a great document to have,” she said. “It’s something that is really authentic and original that our visitors can see. Our visitors always love that — not a duplicate or a replica of the real thing, but the real thing.”
