Rep. Robert Packwood, R-Portland, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, is on a three-day campaign swing through northeastern Oregon.

Packwood spoke in La Grande Sunday at a Lincoln Day dinner, and speaks tonight in Baker. He will be in Ontario Tuesday.

The past few days have been frustrating ones for local fans of Fox network programs.

The mountaintop translator that beams the signal from KPTV Channel 12, the network’s Portland affiliate, has failed.

This is not the only problem.

Also out of service, at least as of Monday afternoon, was the vehicle that repair crews planned to drive up that mountain.

Jim White molds sand into a mountain, the top turning white to look like snow. Then, with one grand swipe of his hand, he sweeps the mountainside into the lake below, creating a landslide that sloshes water out of the lake.

He grins, as one might while playing in a sandbox.

But this version — with colors of shimmering blue water and layers of green, yellow and red at different elevations — takes sandbox play to a whole new level.

White is the IT manager at the Baker County Library. Last month, library director Perry Stokes asked White if he could build a contraption called an “augmented reality sandbox.”
