A Saturday night traffic pileup that involved 20 vehicles on any icy section of Interstate 84 near the top of Cabbage Hill led to nine injuries and prompted a 14-hour closure of the freeway’s westbound lanes.
The chain reaction crashes happened about 6:20 p.m., according to Oregon State Police.
There were 13 passenger cars and seven commercial trucks involved.
Nine people were taken to hospitals in Pendleton and Richland, Washington, five of whom suffered serious injuries, State Police said.
Police did not release the names of any of the people injured.
According to State Police, some of the drivers involved were going too fast for the icy conditions.
The westbound lanes were initially closed between Pendleton and La Grande.
The closure was later extended to Baker City and then to Ontario as truck parking spaces were filled in La Grande and Baker City.
The westbound lanes were reopened about 8 a.m. on Sunday.
