Baker City Police will soon patrol on two wheels at times rather than four.

That’s not new — officers have ridden mountain bikes for many years.

But this is:

No pedaling required.

Or, for that matter, possible. The police department’s newest pair of two-wheeled machines runs on gasoline rather than leg- and lung-power.

SALEM — Cameron Newell of Baker City and his crew at B & C Logging were named Operator of the Year for Eastern Oregon at the Oregon Board of Forestry meeting March 8.

The award recognizes logging operators who consistently perform above the minimum standards set forth in Oregon’s Forest Practices Act for protecting natural resources. Operators are judged on how well they protect soil, water, wildlife habitat and scenic corridors among other natural resources, especially in difficult terrain or challenging circumstances.

B & C Logging, which was nominated by Logan McCrae, La Grande/Baker Unit forester for the Oregon Department of Forestry, was recognized for the care the company took in salvage logging several small private forest parcels in the wake of one of Oregon’s largest wildfires in 2015 — the 104,000-acre Cornet-Windy Ridge fire, the largest in Baker County history.
