Buz Banta, chairman of the multi-use lands committee of the Baker County Livestock Association, reported to members at the monthly meeting Wednesday night that Intermountain Helicopters Inc. of Boise had been given the contract to spray 15,000 acres of private Baker County range land.

Spraying is to start early in May. The spray kills the sagebrush and allows grass to grow.

Whether the historic Sumpter gold-mining dredge will become the centerpiece of a proposed state park near Baker City may soon be resolved.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission will take up the matter of the 1,250-ton dredge at Sumpter in mid to late May. The commission was originally scheduled to meet May 6 at Tryon Creek State Park in Portland.

Previous forums have been held in Ontario and Burns.

Sen. Ron Wyden spoke to an audience of about 80 community members and students at the Baker High School auditorium this morning.

Baker Valley farmer Mark Ward told the Democratic senator that as a farmer, trade is very important, with more than half of Oregon’s potato crop being exported.

Wyden said one out of five jobs in Oregon revolves around international trade.

“What I’m interested in is growing things here, adding value to them here and then shipping them somewhere,” Wyden said.
