The highest achievement in Scouting, rank of Eagle Scout, was conferred Saturday on Terry G. Bahr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil B. Bahr of Baker.

Terry, a member of Troop 450, is 15 years old and a sophomore at Baker High School.

The Baker Valley Irrigation District will receive an award Wednesday for operating a weather station at Mason Dam.

Jim Colton, irrigation district manager, and Betsy Mason, Mason Dam weather observer, will receive the award for 25 years of service.

The Mason Dam weather station — which includes maximum and minimum thermometers and a rain gauge — has been operating since the dam opened in 1968.

When the bear just up the hill roared, Joshua McKim‘s first thought was that he had never heard a bear make a sound like that.

His second thought, almost instantaneous with the first, was that he was awfully glad he had brought his pistol on this mushroom-picking trip.

When he first glimpsed the bear through the thick brush, McKim had cocked the .45 caliber semi-automatic Taurus, a copy of the famous 1911-model Colt.

The bear didn’t move.

The temperature in Baker City nearly dropped to a record low this morning, but by Wednesday afternoon it might soar past the record high for the date.

And by the weekend fresh snow might fall in the mountains. Such are the vagaries of late spring in Baker County.

This morning the temperature at the Baker City Airport dipped to 32 degrees. That didn’t quite break the record low for June 5 of 30, set in 1956.
