The missing single engine green and cream Comanche piloted by John Caldwell, 47, formerly of Baker, was found one mile northeast of Bennet Peak Lookout and three miles west of the Paramount movie site on East Eagle Meadows by Les Wells, a member of the Baker County Sheriff’s Posse.

Brent Thompson’s boots have lately been kicking up a lot of little grasshoppers — and potentially a very big problem — on his potato farm.

The voracious vegetarian insects, which infested more than half a million acres in Northeastern Oregon last summer, apparently weathered the region’s hard winter with aplomb. State officials think this year’s plague could be worse still.

MCEWEN — You might have seen Ernie on your way between Baker City and Sumpter.

He’s hard to miss, after all.

Ernie, a ponderosa pine that might have lived as long as 400 years and has a unique split down the top of his crown, stands just across Highway 7 from the McEwen Church.

But a bolt of lightning a couple years ago finally got the better of Ernie, and on Thursday a crew from the Oregon Department of Transportation cut down the ancient pine.

“It’s so sad,” said Debbie Snowden, who lives near the church and for 30 years has looked out at the majestic tree from her front porch.
