MCEWEN — You might have seen Ernie on your way between Baker City and Sumpter.

He’s hard to miss, after all.

Ernie, a ponderosa pine that might have lived as long as 400 years and has a unique split down the top of his crown, stands just across Highway 7 from the McEwen Church.

But a bolt of lightning a couple years ago finally got the better of Ernie, and on Thursday a crew from the Oregon Department of Transportation cut down the ancient pine.

“It’s so sad,” said Debbie Snowden, who lives near the church and for 30 years has looked out at the majestic tree from her front porch.
