H.S. Cox and Scott Coulter of the Oregon State Highway Department Thursday met with the Baker County Court to discuss the possibility of turning over the old highway from Chandler’s Lane to the intersection of State Highway 86 and 203 to the county.

Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative reached a milestone Monday on the fourth anniversary of its operation in Eastern Oregon. A $12.5 million payment was made to CP National Corp. to complete the purchase of OTEC’s electric distribution system from the California investor-owned utility.

The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest sold more timber during the past fiscal year than in any of the previous five years.

And the forest’s timber sales officer said Thursday that a slight boost in the Wallowa-Whitman’s timber budget could help the forest maintain its sales momentum for the next few years.

Carla Monismith, who oversees the timber sales program for the Baker City-based Wallowa-Whitman, said Forest Supervisor Steve Ellis has set a goal of offering for sale at least 30 million board-feet of timber each fiscal year.

Jodie Hausotter needed a sidewalk, but she wanted more than a strip of concrete.

A plain sidewalk is perfectly functional, to be sure.

But it’s not, in Hausotter’s view, particularly pleasant to look at.

“We wanted to dress up our end of the city,” said Hausotter, who with her husband, Ted, owns Natural Structures at 2005 10th St., just south of Broadway.

The Hausotters fulfilled their goal recently when workers installed 300 feet of steel and iron fence along the sidewalk that was built last fall.
