A landmark decision affecting endangered gray wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming probably won’t have a noticeable effect, at least for the next few years, on wolves that wander in Oregon.

That’s bad news for livestock owners who fear wolves will maraud their herds, said a Union County rancher.

Few of the children who were warned that they’d have to stay home on Feb. 15 if their immunization records were not up to date actually missed class that day, according to school staff throughout Baker County.

The Baker County Health Department sent out just two letters to Baker High School students on Feb. 1. One student complied with the immunization requirements before the exclusion deadline and the other stayed home for the day, said Robin Mawhinney, Special Services secretary.

Like other schools throughout the Baker 5J District, Mawhinney said the BHS staff works to help families meet immunization deadlines throughout the year. New students are checked upon entry to the school to determine whether they need additional immunizations. Those coming from other states might need shots that weren’t required where they attended school before, she said.
