The deer trend is down one percent from last year in Baker County, members of the Powder River Sportsmen’s Club were advised at their regular May monthly meeting.

Dick Humphreys, game biologist for the Oregon State Game Commission, Baker, said during recent trend gathering operations taken during the “greenup” period 22.9 deer were counted for each mile of travel.

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Congressman Greg Walden have asked to give tributes to Army Cpl. Jessica Ann Ellis during her funeral Thursday morning at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Baker City.

Jessica, 24, died May 11 in Baghdad when a bomb exploded outside the vehicle she was riding in.

Her parents, Steve and Linda Ellis, live near Baker City.

Dorothy Mason wasn’t sure why she needed her vacuum cleaner for the grand opening of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.

But she, along with fellow BLM staff, brought their vacuums along to celebrate the center’s ribbon-cutting on May 25, 1992.

Turns out the BLM didn’t have a cleaning contract yet, so Mason and her co-workers needed to help sweep up after the festivities.

“And so we did,” she says.

This Thursday, many of the same people are returning to help the center celebrate its 25th anniversary.
