Herman Martin, of Richland, was recently re-elected as Chairman of Baker County’s Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Committee at the annual convention. He, William D. Shumway of Bridgeport, and Fred Ringer of the Medical Springs area will be responsible for administering farm-action programs in the county for the next year.

CORVALLIS — A veteran newspaperman and a leader in the cattle industry are among those who will be honored Oct. 12 by the Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences.
Byron Brinton and Charles Chandler, both of Baker City, will be added to the college’s Diamond Pioneer Registry for 1993. The registry recognizes contributions to agriculture and related areas by those 75 or older. Both were nominated for the honor by the OSU Extension staff in Baker County.

Perry Stokes has had people lose books and other library items, and damage them and, of course, forget to return them on time.
But he hadn’t ever run across a patron who hid materials inside the library so other customers couldn’t find them.
When Stokes, who has been Baker County’s library director for a decade, confirmed that the man had done just that — indeed, admitted doing so — he took immediate action, under the library district’s code of conduct, by banning the man from the library in Baker City for six months.
