Army Specialist Four John Holcomb, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Holcomb, Richland, received the Bronze Star Medal Sept. 12 at Camp Evans, Vietnam.

Spec. Holcomb received the award for heroism in action while engaged in ground operations against a hostile force in Vietnam. He also holds the Air Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Commendation Medal.

Two open houses are scheduled in Baker City and Sumpter next week in regard to the planning effort for the Sumpter Valley State Park.

A master plan of future park acquisitions, development, partnerships, programs and management will be completed in the spring.

An early storm of sorts blocked the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 east of Baker City Tuesday night but neither of the common causes — snow or ice — was to blame.

The culprit in this closure was corn.

Half a truckload of seed corn, to be specific.

The resulting five-hour closure forced dozens of drivers to stop in Baker City and police later closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway at La Grande.

Black bears roaming in and near Sumpter continue to keep biologists from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) busy.

And the latest bear to spring one of the agency’s traps was something of a surprise.

The bear, which entered a trap Thursday night near Jan Smith’s home in Sawmill Gulch, just south of Sumpter, was the same male bear that a Sumpter man, Doug Forell, shot in the face with a pistol on Sept. 7 while the bear stood on his front porch.
