City councilors will try, for the second time, to get through a first reading Tuesday on the proposed property maintenance ordinance — but it’ll have to be over the objection of Mayor Dennis Dorrah.

Dorrah said he wants his fellow councilors to discuss further refining definitions in the proposed ordinance at a work session before debating the proposal during a regular meeting.

An effort to force a recall election of Baker City Councilor Adam Nilsson has failed.

Lawrence Christian, the Baker City man who filed a petition seeking the recall of Nilsson, said Thursday that he did not collect enough signatures by the Monday deadline.

Christian needed to collect at least 586 signatures from people registered to vote in city elections.

He estimated in late May that he had collected about 250 signatures.

Christian filed the petition on Feb. 23. He said he took the action because Nilsson pleaded guilty last fall to one count of criminal mischief related to his arrest on Aug. 1, 2017, at the abandoned lime plant near Huntington.

Nilsson was appointed to fill a vacancy on the seven-member City Council on Feb. 14, 2017. His term ends Dec. 31, 2018.
