Mary Jo Carpenter grins with delight as she settles into the seat of Baker CIty’s new trolley.

Then she pulls a string to make the bell ring.

“It makes me thing of Rice-A-Roni,” she said of the sound, which mimics the bell from the commercials for “The San Francisco Treat.”

A fire started by a burn barrel scorched about 30 acres on Pine Valley Ranch land Monday morning just south of Highway 86 about 10 miles east of Halfway.

Chief Todd Robinette of the Pine Valley Rural Fire Protection District said about 35 firefighters spent four hours at the scene. The Pine Valley volunteers were joined by firefighters with the Keating Fire Protection District and employees of the U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry and Greater Pine Valley Rangeland Protection Association.

Robinette said that grass and brush burned around a house at the site, but because the lawn had been well kept, the house was not threatened by the blaze.

Robinette said he did not know the names of the residents of the house who were responsible for the fire. He said there would be no attempt to recover the cost of fighting the fire.
