The potent cold front that barged through Baker County Tuesday afternoon ushered in record-breaking chill more common to December than to early October.

The temperature plummeted to 15 degrees Thursday morning at the Baker City Airport. That broke the previous record low for Oct. 10 of 19 degrees, set in 2001. Today’s low of 17 tied the daily record, set in 1990.

The unseasonably frigid air also set a different type of temperature record.

Wednesday’s high of 43 degrees at the airport was the lowest high temperature on record for Oct. 9. The previous record was 48 degrees, set in 2008.

The average high for Oct. 9 is 66 degrees. The average high at the airport doesn’t dip to 43 degrees until late November. Temperature records at the airport date to 1945.
