Clear skies and winds that calmed after a blustery Wednesday allowed the temperature to plummet to a record low of 15 degrees this morning at the Baker City Airport.

That breaks the previous record for Oct. 10 of 19 degrees, set in 2001.

Wednesday also set a record for the lowest high temperature for Oct. 9 at the airport. The high was 43 degrees. The previous record was 48, set in 2008.

Temperature records at the airport date to 1945. Nighttime temperatures tend to be a bit lower at the airport than in Baker City itself. The airport, which is about 3 miles north of town, is about 70 feet lower than the city, and because cold air is heavier than warm, the lowest part of a valley usually is the coldest place at night.
