Dovey was born on Feb. 27, 1922, in Arkansas to William and Ana (Brazzle) Buckner. She attended several grade schools including Willow Creek and Elgin. She graduated from La Grande High School and later attended St. Anthony’s Nursing School in Pendleton. She married her one true love, Creston Shaw, on Nov. 27, 1942, at Weiser, Idaho. They were married for 75½ years.
Dovey worked as a nurse in several doctor’s offices/clinics, including Dr. Haun, Grande Ronde Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and private nursing. Dovey was a devoted great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and wife. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flower beds. She was an excellent seamstress and loved quilting, and she was an excellent chef and loved to cook for everyone.
She was very active. She and Creston once toured Europe on bicycles. She enjoyed flying with Creston, rafting, windsurfing, traveling in the RV and working on the family farm. She was known as the “Happy Hour Queen” on Bird Island, Texas, where they spent many spring and fall seasons windsurfing. Her family called her “Mamo”.”
She made friends everywhere she went — even the Starbottle Saloon at Anthony Lakes named a hamburger after her and reserved her table by the fire every day she came skiing with Creston and family. Dovey was a member of the International Flying Farmers Chapter and received the Queen award in 1984. She was a member of the Anthony Lakes Ski Patrol and was recognized in 2002 for 20 years of service and she was a member of the Auxiliary.
