Former Baker City resident, 1939-2018

Ruth Lea Watson, 79, a longtime La Grande resident and formerly of Baker City, died May 29, 2018, in Boise.

Her graveside service will be at noon Friday, June 8, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Pastor Jesse Whitford will officiate.

Ruth was born on April 9, 1939, at Little Rock, Arkansas, to Eugene and Pearl Harkness. Her family moved to Northeastern Oregon shortly after she was born.

In 1945 they moved to Molalla, where she attended school, worked in strawberry fields and other various jobs, including at a cannery.

She then moved to Baker City where she married Robert I. Watson on July 12, 1960. She became a rancher’s wife and a mother to two boys.

In 1967 they moved to La Grande where they raised their two boys and sold Avon for almost 20 years.

Ruth enjoyed watching nature, animal and rodeo shows on TV, listening to country music, reading romance novels, collecting pig knickknacks and feeding squirrels. She also enjoyed spending time at their family ranch in Keating and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughters.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of La Grande; her son, Douglas (Michelle) of La Grande; granddaughter, Stephanie Barnett (Kirk) of Stanfield; grandsons, Douglas (Morgan) and David, both of Athena; great-granddaughters, Kylie Barnett, Billie Barnett and Emerson Watson; her sister, Billie Dix of Forest Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Freda and Emma; brother, Thurlow; and son, Daniel.

Rosa Lee Campbell

Prairie City, 1936-2018

Rosa Lee Campbell, 81, of Prairie City, died May 25, 2018, at Valley View Assisted Living Facility in John Day.

A graveside service will be Wednesday, June 6, at 1 p.m. at the Prairie City Cemetery with Pastor Keith Dehart of the Prairie Baptist Church officiating. There will be a reception afterward at the Prairie Baptist Teen Center.

Rosa Lee Campbell was born on Sept. 19, 1936, at Post, Texas, to Edith (Slatter) Bartley and Ray Campbell. She attended Prairie City High School and Montavilla School of Cosmetology.

Rosa Lee was self-employed as a hairdresser for 35 years until she retired in 2003. One of her greatest accomplishments was being a successful business owner.

She was married to Orin Wood from 1952 to 1962, and in 1978 she married Michael McLellan. Rosa Lee was an avid reader and enjoyed old movies and shopping. She was a volunteer for 10 years at Save the Family Thrift Store in Mesa, Arizona, and at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa.

Rosa Lee is survived by her brothers, Jerry Don Campbell of Boise, and Bill Campbell of Rockland, Maryland; her sons, Chip Wood and Roger Wood, both of Prairie City; her daughter, Debra Rapp of Palm Springs, California; her husband, Michael McLellan of Mesa, Arizona; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Campbell; her mother, Edith Bartley; her stepfather, Chuck Bartley; her brothers, Bud Campbell and Fuzzy Campbell; and her sister, Mickey Campbell.
