Baker City, 1930-2019

Norma LaRue (Colton) Brooks, died March 3, 2019, at Ashley Manor in Baker City, just two days before her 89th birthday.

A celebration of LaRue’s life will take place in Richland at a later date, with the time and place to be announced.

LaRue was born on March 5, 1930, at Baker City to John and Nora Colton. LaRue was the 11th of their 15 children and she was the first who was born in a hospital. LaRue grew up in the Keating area on a large ranch that ran cattle and sheep. She graduated from Baker High School in 1948.

She married Stan Brooks on June 1, 1952, at her aunt’s home in Richland. Stan and LaRue lived in Richland where they raised their family. She worked numerous jobs throughout her life including helping Stan on the family ranch and dairy, and as a waitress and store clerk.

LaRue loved the mountains — hiking, camping, hunting, picking huckleberries and mushrooms. She was optimistic and loved life to the fullest. She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, playing cards and oil painting and was a homemaker extraordinaire. LaRue enjoyed being a member of the snowmobile club and garden club. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with family, especially at Tamarack Campground.

LaRue is survived by her children, Gail (Mark) Halley, Steve (Gerri) Brooks, and Rod (Kellie) Brooks; her grandchildren, Paul (Lynn)Brooks, Ace Huff, Miranda (Kyle) Iwamoto, David Bacus, and Christopher and Carla Rhea; her great-grandchildren, Marti, Trace, Cutter, Grace, Cole and Bryce; and her sisters, Jean Thompson, Joyce Turner and Gail Stevenson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan; her parents, John and Nora Colton; seven brothers and four sisters, and two grandsons, Matt Halley and Rory Huff.

Elmyra Mitchell

Richland, 1928-2019

Wanda Elmyra Mitchell, 90, formerly of Boise, died on March 2, 2019, at Richland with her family at her side.

A traditional graveside service will take place on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. at Eagle Valley Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family for a potluck reception to be held immediately following at the Richland Christian Church.

Wanda Elmyra (Hunter) Mitchell was born on Sept. 18, 1928, at London, Texas, to Marvin and Alma Hunter. Elmyra was raised in Bandera, Texas, and was the oldest of four children. She married C.E. McAfee and they had three daughters — Wanda, Jacquelyn and Margaret. They later divorced and she met and married John Mitchell. Elmyra went back to school and ultimately received her teaching degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University at Tempe, where she was Pi Lambda Theta. She taught seconnd and third grades for Dysart School District in Arizona and was very proud of being named Teacher of the Year. Elmyra was fond of her friends and enjoyed playing Bingo in Eagle Valley.

Elmyra is survived by her siblings, Jack Hunter, Dolores Ferrell and Carly Sue Burdett; her daughters, Wanda Holcomb, Jacquelyn (Meb) Dailey and Margaret (Don) Holaday; 10 grandchildren,16 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, C.E. McAfee and John Mitchell.

LaNette Theroux

Formerly of Union County, 1945-2019

LaNette E. Theroux, 73, of Dallesport, Washington, died peacefully at home on March 4, 2019, with her husband and her son by her side.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

She was born on June 19, 1945, in Union County to John Erwin Wilson and Evelyn Mary (Eckley) Wilson. She lived in various places throughout Oregon, Alaska and New Mexico, and moved to Dallesport after retirement.

She was a loving mother of four children — Edward L. Rassmussen, Mark E. McHargue, Robert J. McHargue and Rene’ J. Dorr. She was one of seven children (Carolyn Carlton, Ervina Hoffman, Shirley Taylor, Dallas Wilson, Sharron Ables and Cathy Kelly).

She married Robert E. Theroux on Dec. 31, 1976, and became a part of his manufactured home transport and set-up business until she retired.

Her favorite things were her family, her dogs, hummingbirds and chickens.

LaNette is survived by her husband; her siblings, Ervina, Shirley, Sharron and Dallas; her children, Edward, Robert and Rene’; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark; her sisters, Carolyn and Cathy; and her parents.
