Registration for the Youth Hunter Education Challenge program is set

for Nov. 4 starting at 4 p.m. at the Powder River Sportsmen's Club at

Eighth and Broadway streets.

The program, sponsored by the National Rifle Association, started locally 10 years ago.

Since then, many local youngsters have earned places on the Oregon state team and competed in events in Pennsylvania and New Mexico.

The YHEC program is open to any youngster who has completed a state hunter education class.

Participants are taught in four shooting events: .22- caliber rifle, muzzleloading rifle, shotgun, and archery.

YHEC subjects also include wildlife identification, using a map and compass, hunting safety and ethics, and the principles of first aid, wilderness survival and conservation.

There are two age categories in YHEC: Juniors, ages 14 and under; and Seniors, ages 15-18.

The registration fee is $20, which pays for targets, ammunition and other supplies.

The Club has some .22 rifles, shotguns and archery equipment available as well.

More information about YHEC is available by calling Buck Buckner at 523-6109.
