Baker’s football season got off to a rocky start Friday at Nyssa.

Two Nyssa ball carriers ran for more than 100 yards each, and a receiver caught passes for another 100-plus yards as the home Bulldogs defeated Baker 33-6 in the nonleague game.

Baker coach Dave Johnson tried to find some positives in the loss.

“Of course you never like a loss, but we can find some silver linings among the clouds,” Johnson said.

“We looked good at moments — made some good runs, had some good catches and the defense played well at times. It just wasn’t enough.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Baker got on the scoreboard first with 2:44 left in the first half.

With the ball on the Baker 25 the Bulldogs’ Jackson Cutler swept around left end, got a block from Eli Wright, and raced 75 yards for the touchdown.

It didn’t take Nyssa long to answer.

Five plays after Baker’s TD, Nyssa tied the game at 6-6 when quarterback Boston Thompson connected with Pedro Chavez in the back of the end zone from 20 yards out.

Then, after forcing a Baker punt, Thompson needed just three plays before finding Jose Sanchez on a 48-yard touchdown aerial with just four seconds left in the half.

Sanchez proved to be a thorn in Baker’s side, rushing for 122 yards and catching five passes for 117 yards.

Johnathan Iniguez also ran for 134 yards for Nyssa.

“Give credit to Nyssa. They can run the ball,” Johnson said.

Baker’s inconsistent offense couldn’t make the key play when needed. The Bulldogs drove inside the Nyssa 20 two more times but came away with no points.

Cutler finished with 94 yards rushing, and Wright 73. Drew Story caught three passes for 24 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Spencer Smith finished 8-of-30 passing for 41 yards and one interception.

“We’ll just build on the positive plays and head for La Grande,” Johnson said.

Baker (0-1) travels to La Grande Friday for a nonleague game.
