Powder Valley was in unfamiliar territory in the first half of its quarterfinal girls basketball game against Hosanna Christian Wednesday at the Class 1A state tournament at Baker High School.

The Lady Badgers could get almost none of their shots to fall and trailed by as many as 15 points before rallying to win 51-41.

“Only one other time this season, in the first half against Nixyaawii over there, did we shoot that way,” Powder Valley coach Allen Bingham said.

Powder Valley took 45 shots in the opening half against Hosanna Christian, but made only eight (17.8 percent).

Meanwhile, Hosanna Christian took half as many shots (23), making 11 to build a 28-18 halftime advantage.

Bingham said all he told his players during halftime was to relax.

“We don’t usually shoot like that. We just had to get a couple of shots to drop and we’d be OK,” Bingham said.

Not only did Powder Valley come out of the halftime locker room a different team, the Lady Badgers came out red hot.

Kim Williams and Megan Bingham each hit a pair of three-point baskets, and Samantha Kerns added a pair of two-pointers as Powder went on a 16-0 run to take a 34-28 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.

“That was a nice run,” Coach Bingham said.

Powder Valley outscored Hosanna Christian 22-2 in the third quarter.

“It just snowballed,” he said.

A basket by Josie Ash and four Powder Valley free throws built the cushion to 40-30 entering the fourth quarter.

Hosanna Christian scored the first four points of the final period to cut Powder’s lead to 40-34.

But Powder Valley answered. Another three-pointer from Bingham, and baskets by Megan Hufford and Williams built the margin back to 47-34 with 4:43 left in the game.

Bingham led Powder Valley with 18 points and three steals. Kerns added 15 points and a dozen rebounds.

Kirsten Tuttle led Hosanna Christian with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Shielteal Watah added 10 points.

Powder Valley outrebounded Hosanna Christian 49-36, including a 29-7 edge on the offensive boards.

Powder Valley meets Nixyaawii for the fourth time this season in today’s semifinals.
