The Barley Brown’s Brewers weren’t exactly hospitable hosts this weekend at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Brewers, Baker’s American Legion baseball team, swept five games in three days to win the Elkhorn Summer Classic tournament, a wooden bat event.

The Brewers topped La Grande 7-2 in the championship game on a mostly sunny but breezy Sunday afternoon.

Starting pitcher Spencer Shirtcliff held La Grande, which had won three of its four previous games, to just two runs in 5 innings before yielding to Sam McCauley with the bases loaded in the sixth and Baker leading 3-2.

McCauley, who was the winning pitcher in Baker’s 10-0 win over Hermiston Saturday, struck out a La Grande batter to end the threat.

Then, after Baker scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 7-2, McCauley set La Grande down in the seventh to clinch the title.

Although the use of wooden bats tends to benefit pitchers, as the traditional bats don’t have as much power as aluminum models, Brewers coach Al McCauley said Baker’s pitchers were standouts.

“Our pitchers were solid in all five games,” he said. “Real efficient.”

Brewers starters threw complete games in the first four wins.

Baker had little trouble advancing to the championship game, winning two games on Friday and two more on Saturday, three by at least 10 runs.
