The Barley Brown/Hodgen Brewers, Baker’s summer baseball team, won one of five games as host team for the Elkhorn Summer Classic wooden bat baseball tournament this weekend at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker routed Hermiston 12-3 on Saturday for its lone win.

Baker Coach Al McCauley said he had to change the schedule after a team from Twin Falls, Idaho, declined to participate. Baker was scheduled to play Twin Falls Friday, but instead played Spring Creek, Nevada.

Baker lost in the semifinals Sunday to Pendleton, which went on to win the tournament championship with a 3-2 win in 13 innings Sunday night.

Friday’s game

• Spring Creek 7, Baker 5

Spencer Shirtcliff went 2 for 3 and drove in two of Baker’s five runs. Baker led 4-3 after three innings, but Spring Creek rallied with two runs in the fourth to take the lead.

Saturday’s games

• Baker 12, Hermiston 3

The Brewers scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Connor Lay’s three-run double, and breezed to the win. Warner Robertson, Van Arsdall and Logan McCluskey had three hits each. Sam McCauley was the winning pitcher.

• Elko 6, Baker 3

Spencer Smith and Mason Van Arsdall each had two hits for Baker, and Van Arsdall scored two of the Brewers’ three runs.

• Elko 14, Baker 3

In a game that was nearly the opposite of Baker’s win over Hermiston, Elko scored four runs in the first inning. Shirtcliff went 2-for-2 but the Brewers had just six hits in the five-inning game.

Sunday’s Game

• Pendleton 4, Baker 1

Baker’s first batter of the game, McCauley, walked and later scored on Van Arsdall’s single, but the Brewers couldn’t muster another run.

McCluskey started on the mound, and he, along with relievers Robertson (third inning) and McCauley (fifth) held Pendleton mainly in check. But Pendleton scratched out two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
