Baker’s Lauren Benson goes high to make a long return during a previous volleyball match at Baker High School. Baker started the Greater Oregon League season Tuesday by sweeping Ontario.

Baker opened its Greater Oregon League volleyball season by sweeping Ontario 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 Tuesday in the Baker gym.

With Baker leading 5-3 in the first set, Lacy Churchfield served seven straight points to boost the Bulldogs’ lead to 12-3.

Then, with the Bulldogs up 16-10, Lauren Benson served five points to build the cushion to 21-10.

In the second set Baker took the lead for good at 15-13 behind two service points from Lacy Gyllenberg.

Baker never trailed again. Averi Elms and Josie Lewis provided key hits down the stretch.

Anna Carter served Baker to a 7-0 start in the final set.

Ontario managed to pull within 16-15, but five service points by Kaylee Dalke put the game away.

Baker swept the nonvarsity matches, winning the JV match 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 and the JV2 match 18-25, 25-19, 15-9.

The Baker varsity lost a nonleague match at Pendleton on Monday 13-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-25.

Baker won the junior varsity match at Pendleton 25-19, 16-25, 15-9.

The varsity team travels to Sisters for a tournament on Saturday.
