Baker had few answers for Ontario Friday in a 48-20 nonleague football loss to the Tigers at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
It was the final nonleague game for the Bulldogs (1-4) before hosting La Grande Friday in the Greater Oregon League opener for both teams.
Ontario, a senior-dominated squad, scored just about any way it chose.
The Tigers ran for three touchdowns, threw for two scores, returned an interception for a touchdown, kicked four conversion kicks, ran for one PAT, and kicked two field goals.
Baker answered with three touchdowns, two by Alex Hammans.
Ontario opened the scoring four minutes into the first quarter when Ethan Kameshige scored on a 3-yard run. Alex Gastelum added the PAT kick for a 7-0 Tiger lead.
Ontario increased its lead to 14-0 with 2:30 left in the first quarter on a trick play.
Quarterback Mike Mejia handed the ball to Kameshige, who lateraled it back to Mejia. Meanwhile, Adam Hawker was running downfield. Mejia connected with Hawker for a 38-yard score. Gastelum’s second conversion kick gave Ontario a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Then, following an Ontario interception, Gastelum increased Ontario’s lead to 17-0 five plays into the second quarter on a 25-yard field goal.
Following the kickoff, Hammans was hit at the line, spun around and scooted 67 yards for a Baker touchdown.
Mejia later increased Ontario’s cushion to 24-6 on a 5-yard run. Gastelum added his third PAT.
Gastelum then added his second field goal, from 32 yards, with 1:48 left in the first half for a 27-6 Ontario lead at halftime.
Neither team scored until 1:10 remained in the third period. Then Mejia found Hawker on an 11-yard TD pass to build the Tigers’ lead to 35-6.
Baker answered 30 seconds into the fourth quarter when quarterback Spencer Smith found Cody DeCarli on a 19-yard TD pass. Smith then hit Jackson Cutler for the 2-point conversion, pulling Baker to within 35-14.
Another scoring run by Kameshige and an interception return by Gastelum increased Ontario’s lead to 48-14 with about 5 minutes left in the game.
Baker closed out the scoring when Gabe Gambleton hit Hammans on a 67-yard pass play.
