Bulldogs win Nyssa tourney title

NYSSA — The Baker girls basketball team had a preview of the Greater Oregon League season by beating La Grande Saturday to claim the championship at the Nyssa tournament.

The Bulldogs led from the start in the 55-44 win, their third win in three days.

Baker (8-1 on the season) advanced to the championship game by beating Nyssa 55-41 on Friday. Baker opened the tournament with a 67-31 rout of Adrian on Thursday.

Baker didn’t have an answer for La Grande’s Camryn Collman, who led all scorers with 22 points, but no other Tiger scored more than 6.

Baker didn’t have an answer for La Grande’s Camryn Collman, who led all scorers with 22 points, but no other Tiger scored more than 6.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, followed their season-long script with a balanced offense. Kaeli Flanagan led Baker with 14 points. Jayme Ramos added 10, Emily Carter 9 and Sydney Younger 8.

Baker led 16-12 after the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime.

The Bulldogs put the game away by outscoring La Grande 17-10 in the third quarter to boost the lead to 45-33.

Semifinal game

Nyssa stayed close for much of the game, outscoring Baker 15-11 in the second quarter to pull within 27-26 at halftime.

But Baker’s defense was stellar in the second half, holding Nyssa to just 13 points.

Younger led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Ramos with 12 and Desi Davis with 10.

Baker will travel to Sisters to compete in a tournament starting Thursday. Baker plays Molalla at 7 p.m.
