If Baker boys basketball coach Brent Gyllenberg didn’t already have mostly-white hair the play of the Bulldogs would have changed the color anyway.

Baker (8-7 overall) played its third straight nail-biter Tuesday against Fruitland. Cayn Osborn hit a jumper from the corner with 4.5 seconds left in the game to lift Baker to a 50-48 win in the Baker gym.

Gyllenberg had called timeout with 57.2 seconds left to set a final play.

The Bulldogs then worked the ball around the perimeter before trying to get the ball to the baseline.

“We wanted the ball to go to the corner,” Gyllenberg said. “From there we would have had three options to attempt a layin.”

But Fruitland’s defense bottled up the passing lanes and Baker had to think quickly.

“Cayn improvised,” Gyllenberg said.

“We wanted the ball in his hands. Shots like that he makes more often than not.”

The teams battled through 14 lead changes and eight ties.

It didn’t look like either team would score in the first quarter.

Fruitland hit two field goals, and Baker two free throws for a 4-2 Grizzlies lead at the break.

Caden Long’s rebound basket with 5:42 left in the first half was Baker’s first field goal.

Then, after Fruitland took an 11-9 edge midway through the second quarter, Baker scored the final seven points of the half for a 16-11 halftime advantage.

A three-point play by Gabe Gambleton to start the third quarter gave Baker its largest lead, 19-11.

Fruitland later went on a 9-0 run to build a 27-22 lead. The Grizzlies led 29-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Neither team led by more than four points in the fourth quarter. Half of the eight ties came in the final period, the last at 48-48 with 1:12 left in the game.

Gambleton led Baker with 18 points. Long added 12 points and six rebounds, and Drew Story 10 points and seven rebounds.

Baker played without Kaden Sand, who injured his shoulder Saturday at Mac-Hi. Gyllenberg said Sand is day-to-day.

Baker returns to Greater Oregon League play Friday when the Bulldogs host Ontario.
