Baker gave top-ranked Henley one of its tougher games of the season Wednesday, but it wasn’t tough enough.

Henley (25-1) edged the Bulldogs 3-0 in the opening round of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs at Klamath Falls. Henley, on a 22-game winning streak, advances to its sixth straight 4A quarterfinals.

“It was a tough loss. The kids played their hearts out,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “We played well. We played them as close as anybody has this season.”

Looking at Henley’s scores, Smith was right. The three runs were the least the Hornets had scored in a game this season.

Henley took a 2-0 first-inning lead, on a pair of unearned runs.

Jake Overstreet led off with a walk and went to second on a Baker throwing error.

One out later, Blake Loney singled Overstreet home, but was thrown out at second.

John Tacchini then reached base on Baker’s second error of the inning before winning pitcher Heith Rasica tripled him home.

Rasica, a sophomore who already is being looked at by Division I colleges and professional teams, limited Baker to just two hits through six innings. Rasica struck out seven, walked one and hits a pair of batters.

“Henley had a pretty good pitcher,” Smith said. “Then we gave ourselves a chance to win.”

Overstreet relieved Rasica in the seventh and an error and two walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs with two outs. Overstreet got Dawson Linscott to pop out to second to end the game.

“Our offense left us,” Smith said.

Morgan Bennett and Sam McCauley pitched for Baker, allowing just seven hits.

“Morgan and Sam threw well,” Smith said.

Baker finished 11-14.
