Baker picked exactly the wrong time to suffer its first baseball losses of the season Friday.

The Bulldogs (10-2 overall and 2-2 in the Greater Oregon League) lost a GOL doubleheader 4-2 and 9-4 to La Grande at a rainy Baker Sports Complex.

“We just didn’t hit the ball like we have been,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“I told the boys after the games that adversity builds character. You’re not going to win a championship without character.”

Smith said the challenge for the Bulldogs is to successfully rebound from the pair of league losses.

“It’s a reality check, but I think these kids can handle it,” Smith said.

In Game 1, Baker led 2-0 before La Grande rallied with four runs in the fourth through sixth innings.

Baker managed just six hits behind pitcher Sam McCauley.

“Sam pitched well. He struck out 12,” Smith said.

“We just didn’t give him the offensive support we needed to.”

In the second game, Baker trailed 4-2 after five innings. La Grande then erupted for five runs in the sixth to complete the sweep.

“It stings,” Smith said.

“We’ll see how we respond.”

Baker travels to Burns Tuesday for a single nonleague game. The Bulldogs then play host to Ontario (3-1 in the GOL) Friday starting at 2 p.m.
