LA GRANDE — The Barley Brown’s Brewers, Baker’s American Legion team, rallied in the seventh inning to top Pendleton 10-9 Saturday and claim the consolation championship at the La Grande Wood Bat Battle tournament.
The win ended Baker’s summer season with a 17-15 record.
It was Baker’s second win over Pendleton in three days. The Brewers opened the tournament Thursday with an 8-3 win.
Baker then dropped two straight games on Friday — 3-2 to La Grande and 10-2 to North Eugene.
In the La Grande loss, Baker led 2-1 in the seventh inning before La Grande rallied for the win.
In Saturday’s consolation final, Baker led 5-2 after five innings.
Starting pitcher Spencer Shirtcliff shut out Pendleton in the third through fifth innings.
But Pendleton rallied in the sixth by scoring seven runs, taking advantage of two Baker errors.
The Brewers scored one run in the sixth to cut Pendleton’s lead to 9-6.
Shirtcliff worked out of a jam in the seventh inning, giving up consecutive singles to start the inning before getting a strikeout and then fielding two balls and throwing to first for the second and third outs.
Baker then came to bat with one last chance, still trailing 9-6.
Justin Miller and Mason Van Arsdall both drew walks, Shirtcliff followed with a single to load the bases with no outs.
Werner Robertson was hit by a pitch, driving in one run to cut Pendleton’s lead to 9-7.
Zander Arriaga walked to drive in another run, and Baker was within 9-8.
Payton Shirtcliff drove in the tying run with a fielder’s choice ground ball.
Then, with runners on second and third, Robertson, at third, broke for home as though to steal, Baker Coach Al McCauley said.
Robertson’s move prompted the Pendleton catcher to make a throwing error, allowing Robertson to score the winning run.
